HPI: Reinforcement Learning – Introduction

In-person workshop introducing reinforcement learning and AI agents that learn by trial and error.

The workshop “Reinforcement Learning – Introduction” will take place on August 21, 2026 at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam. Organized by the AI Service Center Berlin-Brandenburg @ HPI, the session introduces reinforcement learning and shows how AI agents can learn through trial and error.

The workshop focuses on how AI systems can solve tasks when no existing training data is available or when even humans do not yet know the best solution strategy. Reinforcement learning offers a different approach: agents learn by interacting with their environment, receiving feedback on their actions, and gradually improving their behavior.

The three-hour in-person workshop provides a practical introduction to the fundamentals of reinforcement learning. Participants will gain an understanding of when this approach is useful, how learning agents work, and what role rewards, feedback, and iterative optimization play.
