AI Campfire: Integrating AI into Moodle – Legal Requirements for Higher Education Institutions
Online workshop on the legal, organizational, technical, and didactic requirements for integrating AI into Moodle at higher education institutions.
The AI Campfire by ZDT Brandenburg focuses on how universities can integrate AI functions into the learning management system Moodle while taking legal and organizational requirements into account. The session examines how the regulatory classification of an AI application can change depending on its function, purpose, and concrete use case, including questions around provider and operator obligations and potential classification as a high-risk AI system.
The program combines practical examples and discussion. Topics include experiences with AI-supported teaching and the ByCS AI plugins, the use of AI in online examinations, and a case workshop on integrating a RAG chatbot into Moodle. Four concrete scenarios are discussed: a RAG-based course assistant, AI-generated grading recommendations, AI as an explicitly permitted examination tool, and an AI system used to flag potentially suspicious examination behavior.
The aim is not to provide a finished legal guideline, but to surface different perspectives, identify unresolved questions, and discuss where legal, didactic, organizational, and technical clarification is needed before AI functions are deployed in Moodle.
