Reading Images in the Age of AI – free in-person panel
Can we still trust images? Join scholars Greta Olson, Elisabeth Lechner and Irene Kacandes for a live conversation on visual literacy, deepfakes, individual agency and accountability in an age of AI-generated images.
On June 11, 2026, De Gruyter Brill invites participants to the event “Reading Images in the Age of AI” in Berlin. The discussion explores the profound transformations of visual communication in the age of artificial intelligence and provides an interdisciplinary space to engage with current societal challenges.
The focus is on how AI-generated and manipulated images are reshaping our understanding of authenticity, accountability, and social norms. Together with experts, participants will discuss topics such as deepfakes, visual manipulation, media perception, and the legal and political implications of these developments.
As part of the transatlantic “Humanities for Humans” series, the event brings together perspectives from literature, media, and cultural studies. It aims to provide orientation in an increasingly complex visual landscape and to foster a more reflective and responsible approach to digital imagery.
